SCARPA Boot Fitter

Connecting skiers with the boot that actually fits, for SCARPA North America.

The gap

Boot fitting is technical, personal, and often inaccessible. Most skiers end up in the wrong boot, which leads to pain, injury, and returns that carry a real shipping and carbon cost. SCARPA had no way to recommend a boot outside of an in-person conversation with a rep or retailer.

My role

I designed and built a native iOS app in Swift and ARKit that turns an iPhone's LiDAR sensor into a boot fitter. The app guides a scanner and a subject through a four-phase flow of setup, capture, reconstruction, and measurement. It then maps the resulting foot geometry against SCARPA's boot specifications to produce a Mondopoint size and model recommendation.

The key decision

Instead of a generic sizing chart, the app captures a skier's actual 3D foot and lower-leg geometry. Early scans kept picking up the floor and furniture, so I constrained LiDAR capture to an adjustable 3D bounding box around the foot. I also modeled the scan flow on 3D Measure Up's six-step pipeline after meeting with their team. This removed the noise and made a measurement-based recommendation possible.

What I built

A LiDAR foot-scanning flow covering setup, capture, reconstruction, and measurement, with real-time positioning feedback.
A boot catalog spanning alpine resort, alpine touring, and telemark, with a women's/men's toggle.
A Mondopoint sizing and recommendation engine.
A 3D model export that shares foot geometry with SCARPA's design team to support more size-inclusive boots.

Outcome

120 frames captured per scan to build each 3D foot model
25 SCARPA boot models mapped from product tech sheets across 3 categories
2,120 → 20s Mondopoint output calibrated from unusable to a real boot-size range
1,000 files lost to a terminal overwrite, then rebuilt from scratch over one weekend into a cleaner architecture
15 weeks from first commit to a presentation for SCARPA's C-Suite
2 SCARPA teams briefed: HQ in Italy and North America in Boulder
